FB10 - Demystifiyng the Integration of Big Data Technologies into Existing Architecture
by Peter Aiken

OVERVIEW

Having entered the post-big data era, to what-and where are organizations to turn to address these challenges?

The answer is to rely on organizational capabilities. The need for and approaches to these new data requirements are faced by virtually every organization.

Before creating solutions, it is important to understand how these new technological capabilities can be harnessed toward organization strategy. This talk demystifies the concept of big data adding value – providing the basis for a more objective discussion of its capabilities/limitations and how both more data and better techniques can benefit your organization.

Yes, we face a data deluge and big data seems to be largely the focus when discussing it.  But much of what has been written about big data is focused on selling algorithms, hardware, and services.

The truth is that until the concept of big data can be objectively defined, any measurements, claims of success, quantifications, etc. must be viewed skeptically and with suspicion.  While both the need for and approaches to these new data requirements are faced by virtually every organization, jumping into the fray ill-prepared has (to date) reproduced the same dismal IT project results.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Comprehending the very real, very rapid, very large increases in data of all forms.
  • Understanding the challenges faced by organizations when attempting to leverage data.
  • Architecting the means by which big data techniques can compliment existing data management practices.
  • Necessary but insufficient pre-requisites to exploiting big data techniques.
  • Prototypical nature of practicing big data techniques.
  • The need to approach these as innovation initiatives instead of projects.
